my first quilt

Decade, my first quilt made after the quilting bug got me. I made my first one when I was about 11or 12 from a big bag of scraps Momma had from making our clothes and scrapes she was given. It was a huge string quilt. Bonnie Hunter at http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-quilts.html  asked what our first quilt was.

I didn’t appreciate the work in my first quilt and used and abused it. I even laid out in the sun on it. Years later I gave it to our poor dog Coco who was deathly afraid of storms.  This quilt is called Decade, the name fits. It took me 10 yrs to complete. I didn’t work on it exclusively during that time. My daughter uses it daily now and has a deep appreciation for it and all quilts in general. She sat by me many hours while I was hand quilting it. When I would get the needle stuck she would take my hemostats and pull it through and she even threaded some of my needles. Is she a quilter? Not yet but I haven’t given up on her.

thanks, I had lots of encouragement along the way from a friend that made one with me, so we just kept swapping fabrics.

I really like this scrappy quilt! The name is great, too. I think I have a few quilts that could use a name like that--if they ever get finished!

What a wonderful quilt! And it was your first? Wow! I love quilts that are used and loved and have memories all wrapped up in it... and this one definitely has!
